The Hotchkiss School invites applications, nominations, and inquiries as it seeks a reflective, innovative, and collaborative leader as its next Dean of Faculty. As a direct report to the Associate Head of School and a member of the School’s administrative team, the Dean of Faculty provides overall leadership for the faculty and the academic program at Hotchkiss. An experienced, data-driven, and culturally competent leader with strong consultative skills, the Dean of Faculty leads innovative curricular efforts that align with the School’s academic mission and is involved with the active recruitment, retention, professional development, and evaluation of faculty.
The Hotchkiss School is a highly selective, independent boarding school located in Lakeville, Connecticut. Founded in 1891, the School provides an education of academic distinction to 599 students in grades 9 through 12, and to a small number of postgraduates. The boarding school experience at Hotchkiss provides students with exceptional curricular, co-curricular, and residential experiences that transform students’ lives. Hotchkiss offers more than 200 courses, 10 off-campus learning programs, 60 athletic teams in 19 different sports, and 80+ student clubs, affinity groups, publications, community service organizations, and performance groups.
The Dean of Faculty is an experienced educator and leader who will work in partnership with the Associate Head of School to recruit and retain an outstanding and diverse faculty that will thrive in a school environment characterized by rigorous academic standards and rewarding residential and co-curricular experiences. As an academic thought partner, the Dean of Faculty will collaborate with the Associate Head of School, the Dean of Academic Life, and the Heads of Departments and focus on priorities including curricular innovation, maintaining rigorous academic standards, and professional development plans and opportunities for teaching faculty.
The ideal candidate for the next Dean of Faculty will have a comprehensive understanding of teaching and learning and a demonstrated willingness to explore and embrace new pedagogical practices, technologies, and developing trends. This position requires an educator with a sense of humor, high emotional intelligence, a collaborative leadership style, and a deep commitment to supporting the School’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Given the residential responsibilities for this role, the School provides year-round housing which includes utilities and enjoying meals in the dining hall when school is in session. For employees who have worked full time in schools or other educational institutions for five or more years, Hotchkiss provides 90% of day tuition remission for children of employees who meet Hotchkiss’s admissions criteria as well as an option for portable tuition remission for children attending other tuition-charging high schools, grades 9-12.
