Vice President and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer

The Vice President, Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer (CDIO), who will report to the President of UT Southwestern Medical Center, will have responsibility for advancing institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategies and operations broadly through the institution. Additionally, the CDIO will have oversight of the Office of Institutional Equity and Access. The CDIO role is expected to oversee implementation and execution of UT Southwestern’s DEI strategies and work with external and internal stakeholders to develop additional DEI strategies, programs and resources in order to advance UT Southwestern’s national stature and impact related to health disparities, education, training and research. The ideal candidate for the Vice President and CDIO will have the credibility and leadership ability to steward and advance, in partnership with key leaders, UT Southwestern’s DEI vision, be an efficient convener of stakeholders, an aggregator for DEI initiatives and help to catalyze the UT Southwestern community towards deeper understanding and achievable DEI solutions. The CDIO role, in collaboration with leaders from across the organization, will lead from a position primarily of influence to create and foster an environment enriched by diversity and inclusion. It is expected this will be accomplished through the design and implementation of creative and innovative programs and initiatives that increase UT Southwestern’s diversity profile, portfolio of best practices, innovative initiatives, enhance DEI knowledge, and advance DEI efforts that impact faculty, patients, students, employees and the community. The CDIO will ensure execution of and re-development of the institution’s DEI strategic plan in order to further enable an integrated enterprise-wide approach for these efforts by working collaboratively and cooperatively with executive and senior leaders from across the organization.
The new Vice President and CDIO must operate as a visionary leader who understands how to effectively drive change in a complex patientcentered, mission driven, academic environment. They must embody the mission of UT Southwestern and embrace its vision, leading through respect, integrity, wisdom, humility, and intellectual curiosity.
The Vice President and CDIO will contribute to the overall success of the organization by working collaboratively with leadership throughout UTSouthwestern to realize the strategic vision for DEI and lead the implementation of plans to advance the institution’s efforts in support of its academic, clinical, innovation, community and philanthropic objectives. The CDIO will also work with key stakeholders to ensure consistency of messaging in various communication vehicles, completion of surveys, and programs across all facets of the enterprise. Developing agreed upon KPI’s and a score card will provide a mechanism to track progress. Key leaders and stakeholders include but are not limited to:

- Associate Dean, Women’s Careers
- Associate Dean for Faculty Diversity
- Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion, Medical School
- Assistant Deans for Diversity and Inclusion in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
- Assistant Dean for Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Affairs, School of Health Professions
- Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer
- Vice President, Community and Corporate Relations
In conjunction with the Office of Institutional Equity & Access and with dotted line accountability from across DEI leaders embedded throughout the organization, the CDIO will lead a team that will include the following functional areas:
- Affirmative Action Plan
- Division of Equal Opportunity
- Business Resource Groups
- Enterprise Diversity and Inclusion Programs, including acquisition and retention of diverse talent across the organization
- Regulatory/EEO Compliance, including Title IX
- Dotted line accountability from:
- Key diversity and inclusion Academic Affairs leadership (as indicated above); and
- Supply Chain Management and their oversight of the Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) Program which promotes and ensures supplier diversity at UT Southwestern in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations
Qualifications:
- Terminal degree (i.e. MD, DO, JD, PhD) is preferred.
- Significant academic, clinical, and administrative experience in a university health science center or comparable organization, preferably at the academic rank of professor or associate professor.
